Because the king of the oil world is Saudi Arabia. Last time I checked, they hated our guts. We do have oil near us, but it's not a surplus like they have, ours is much more limited. At least, that's what I know of it.

The U.S. also doesn't have the capacity to refine (not drill, but turn crude into fuel-oil) our own oil at a scale great enough to allow US to dictate refined oil prices. Also, because of environmental concerns, we do not tap a significant portion of our own capacity. Also, the old economic play comes in- they have it, we want it- we pay what they ask. So it goes... Hah- I lived in France all of 10 years ago (dang, I'm old!)- back then, gas was almost $3 a gallon, while we were still under $1! Imagine how it is now! Also, the dollar is weak as hell, and Warlord President Bush continues to waste untold billions on "liberating" Iraq, and is planning more wars. Yeesh. Here's to hoping our next Prez can fix his mess-ups! Cheers- Mark W.

Ah. I wondered if you had any French connection when I saw"Salut" in one of your posts. But I have to say, that's true. Bush was a mistake, and thankfully it's almost over. :]

It's not entirely Bush's fault...Just throwing this out there. The reason for high gas prices is, in a large portion, speculation and dependence on foreign oil. We have, if you recall, been "addicted" to foreign oil long before Bush showed up in the White House. I'll agree with you that Bush's usefulness in Washington is approaching a dead point, but it is simply unfair to blame him for the bulk of the nation's problems, when a lot of it is a Congress that will not vote in many policies he has proposed that would lighten some of the burdens.
